Dear Sister: Salon Experiences, Bridal Makeup & Hair
Sisters, tonight we are talking about salons. What are our experiences with salons?
with Alishba & Sanya
4 min read
Tonight on Dear Sister I sit down with Alishba and Sanya and we do what we do best: talk about the things that actually happen in our lives. This time it is salons. The good, the bad, and the moments that left us crying in the car. If you have ever walked out of a salon with a look you did not ask for, paid way too much for it, and then had to smile and say bohot acha, very good, this one is for you.
The trust we give and the scars we get
Alishba opens up about a waxing experience that left more than just smooth skin. She has sensitive skin, but the salon woman insisted, “hamara hot wax hai, it is fine.” A few days later, the red mark on her upper lip turned purple, then black. “I had this black scar over here for like a year and a half,” she says. It became an insecurity, especially with her front-facing job. Every conversation felt like the other person was staring at it. And then people would ask, “What is that?” As if she needed the reminder. That is the thing about salon mishaps: they do not just hurt in the moment. They sit on your face and in your mind long after.
When the mirror becomes the enemy
We swap bridal makeup horror stories because honestly, who has not heard one? Sanya recalls a friend whose sister got her makeup done at a famous salon in Islamabad for her wedding. She came home, looked in the mirror, and started crying. Right there, in her wedding dress, she washed her face and did her own makeup in half an hour. “I was shook,” Sanya says. “Who does that?” But we all know someone who has. The pressure on a bride is already immense. The last thing she needs is to feel like a stranger in her own skin. Alishba adds that many salons do not even tell you how to prep your skin beforehand, and then on the day they blame you for it. “That is not something a bride wants to hear,” she says. And she is right.
The small things that make us keep coming back
Not every experience is a disaster. We talk about the salons that get it right. For Sanya, it is the ones that treat you like a guest, not a task. “I am not going to a salon to be told you have really bad hair,” I say. “I am going to be pampered and feel beautiful.” Alishba remembers a salon that had a tailor on standby for a bride whose dress needed fixing. That tiny detail, that extra bit of care, is what turns a one-time client into a loyal one. It is the menu of services handed to you when you are overwhelmed, the stylist who explains every step before touching your hair, the diffuser they put on without you asking. These are the small things that matter.
The grey hair myth and what the dermatologist said
We have all heard it: dye your hair and it will turn grey. Sanya does not buy it, unless bleach is involved. I went to a dermatologist once because I was worried too. She told me that grey hair is mostly about deficiencies, not dye. Vitamin D, hormonal changes, our indoor lifestyles. “Us girls, we do not realize how little sun we get,” I share. I dyed my hair every shade of red and burgundy for years and not a single white strand appeared. Then my vitamin D dropped, and suddenly there they were. So no, the dye is not the villain here. But if you are stopping because of an allergy or sensitive skin, that makes sense. Otherwise, do not let the fear of grey keep you from the colour you want.
Our go-to spots
We end with a few honest recommendations, no sponsors, just places we have actually loved. Alishba swears by Eamon for makeup in F7, someone our age who knows what looks right without the heavy gold lids. For nails, we both agree on Royalty. I love Noman for hair, and there is a colourist in F8 who walked me through the whole process before touching my hair. Sanya, with her naturally perfect eyebrows mashallah, has never had them done, but she vouches for Shades in Gujjar Mala for makeup and Makeovers by Ammaima for haircuts. These are the names we trust, and we hope you share yours too.
Why this conversation matters
We are not just swapping stories for fun. Every time a woman leaves a salon feeling worse than when she walked in, something is broken. You pay, you trust, and you deserve to feel beautiful. If this episode makes even one person feel seen, or helps someone avoid a bad experience, then it was worth it. And if you have a gem of a salon or a cautionary tale, drop it in the comments. Let us help each other out.
