How To Build Your Business From Home - Dropshipping For Beginners Ft. Spocket
In tonight's special episode, I am talking about e-commerce and how you can launch and manage a business from home.
5 min read
One of the questions I get a lot is how to start a business from your home. I understand why this comes up, especially from women. Maybe you have mobility issues, you cannot get out of the house that much. Maybe you are a stay-at-home mom with a hundred responsibilities. You cannot just step out and run a business. So I thought it was time I addressed this properly.
This one is just me, walking you through the basics of e-commerce and dropshipping. I share what I have learned, the mistakes I made, and why dropshipping might be the answer for so many of us who want to build something from our own room.
Why e-commerce from home makes sense
E-commerce is one of the best things that has happened to us. In simple terms, it is a business model where you sell and buy items electronically, through the internet. For women who cannot leave the house easily, this is a door that was not open before. You do not need a brick and mortar shop. You do not need to rent a space. You can do it literally from the room that you sleep in.
The product side and why dropshipping changed everything for me
First things first, you need a product or a service. That is the heart of it. But managing the product yourself, sourcing it, storing it, packaging it, shipping it, that is a lot of work. I know because I did it. I had to put all of my energies there. So many things I wanted to do with my business, I could not do because I was stuck in that cycle. If your product is not well done, there is no point, so I had to give it everything. But that meant I could not scale.
Dropshipping takes that weight off you. You are basically a third party. Your supplier does the sourcing, packaging, order management, and shipping. You just send them the order and they handle it. One platform that makes this simple is Spocket. It connects you to millions of suppliers from the US and Europe. You find a product you want to sell, and you sell it. The website is super convenient. You log in, you see the products, you select your supplier, and your product side is literally managed.
I think about the alternative. Without dropshipping, you get the product yourself, you find a logistics partner like TCS or Leopards, you process the order, you do the packaging, you forward it to them. With dropshipping, all of that is skipped. And the invoices your customer gets are branded with your name, so it still feels personal. Another good thing is that if you want to source from AliExpress, you can import those products through Spocket for free. The whole process becomes automated, bulk orders get processed together, and you are not doing it one by one.
I wish I had done dropshipping from the start. My personal experience was a struggle. It was so time consuming. And then if you want to delegate, suddenly it is a lot more money. Wohee, the same old cycle: warehouse rent karna, logon ko hire karna, hire people to manage the warehouse, manage the orders, package the orders, send the orders. The cost of all that compared to just using a platform like Spocket is huge.
Setting up your online shop
Once your product is sorted, you need an online shop. Instagram is great for marketing, but it is not an e-commerce platform. Taking orders there makes the process complicated. You need a proper website. There are options like Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, and Squarespace. I highly recommend Shopify. A lay person who has no clue about web development can set up a shop there. And the interesting thing is, you can connect your Shopify or WooCommerce store directly to Spocket. That makes the dropshipping process so much more convenient. You can process 25 orders at once instead of one by one. If you have a hundred orders, you only do it four times.
Marketing and reaching your people
Marketing has become much easier. All you need is an Instagram account and start posting your stuff. You can also use Facebook, Google Ads, Facebook Ads. The cost is much cheaper than traditional methods, and it is direct conversion. You can specifically target your audience. For example, one of the products I sell is a study planner. I can target students because they are my actual buyers. When it becomes specific, your conversions are higher and your business runs better.
The backend: payments, banking, and registration
You need to figure out your payment methods. Cash on delivery, internet banking, credit cards, EasyPaisa, JazzCash, all these fintech options are available. Your money is managed online, so you do not have to handle cash physically. Then there is banking. You need a business account. In Pakistan, I suggest going for Meezan or Silk Bank because my personal experience with them was good. With Meezan, you can start with just 1,000 rupees. Standard Chartered requires a huge amount. So the entry barrier is low.
Before the bank account, you need to register your business. If you are the only owner, start with a sole proprietorship. Get your registration, open the business account, and you are good to go. These are the most basic things you need.
Why this matters now
E-commerce has really pushed people into entrepreneurship, into innovation, into disruption. Everything has become so much more accessible. You need a basic knowledge of the internet and how to use a computer, and you are honestly good to go. Yes, there is an initial capital required, but it is much more reduced than in the past. If anybody wants to do a business, they do not have a lot of excuses not to do it anymore. E-commerce and especially dropshipping have made it so much easier.
This is for the woman who thinks she cannot. You can build something from your room. You do not need a warehouse. You do not need to step out except maybe to set up your bank account, and even that is becoming easier with banking apps. The door is open. You just have to walk through.
